Avantium wins Amsterdam Inventor Award 2009

Award for new generation biofuels and bioplastics.

 

Burgemeester Cohen heeft donderdag de Amsterdam Inventor Award 2009 uitgereikt aan Avantium voor de meest toonaangevende uitvinding van afgelopen jaar.

On Thursday Avantium received from Mayor Cohen the Amsterdam Inventor Award 2009 for the most prominent invention of 2008.

 

Tijdens het Inventor Dinner, waar de Inventor Award werd uitgereikt, presenteerden prominente R&D-bedrijven en kennisinstellingen uit de Amsterdamse regio hun meest opzienbarende uitvindingen. Onder de deelnemers waren Shell, Corus, Kiadis, Logica, de Universiteit van Amsterdam, de Vrije Universiteit en het AMC. Het Inventor Dinner wordt georganiseerd door Amsterdam Topstad en de Amsterdamse Innovatie Motor.

 

During the Inventor Dinner R&D companies presented their most amazing discoveries. Participating organizations were among others Shell, Corus, Kiadis, Logica, Umiversity of Amsterdam, VU University of Amsterdam, and Academic Medical Centre Amsterdam (AMC).

Avantium ontwikkelt een nieuwe generatie biobrandstoffen en bioplastics onder de naam "Furanics", die geproduceerd kunnen worden uit biomassa, zoals suikers en andere koolhydraten. Door gebruik te maken van cellulose en agrarische reststromen kan Avantium Furanics maken op basis van biomassa die niet concurreert met voedselketens.

Avantiums Furanics bioplastics kunnen goedkoper geproduceerd worden dan plastics op basis van aardolie. Furanics bioplastics hebben aantrekkelijke eigenschappen voor bestaande toepassingen waarvoor nu plastics op basis van aardolie worden gebruikt.

Het Furanics biobrandstoffen programma van Avantium is gericht op het ontwikkelen van een nieuwe generatie biobrandstoffen die zowel goede eigenschappen hebben (zoals hoge energiedichtheid en mengbaarheid met conventionele brandstoffen) als ook goedkoop kan worden geproduceerd. Testen in dieselmotoren hebben bewezen dat Furanics een goede brandstofcomponent zijn voor bestaande automotoren.

 

Avantium develops "Furanics", a new generation of bioplastics and biofuels. Furanics can be produced from biomass such as sugars and other carbohydrates. By using cellulose and agricultural rest streams Avantium can make Furanics from biomass which does not compete with the food chain. Avantium's Furanics bioplastics can be produced cheaper than oil-based plastics and they have attractive properties with the potential to replace traditional plastics in many existing applications. Avantium's Furanics biofuel program aims to develop a new generation of biofuels with both excellent properties (such as high energy density and mixability with conventional fuels) and competitive production costs. Tests in Diesel engine proved that Furanics is fuel component for existing combustion engines.

Produkten op basis van Furanics vormen een duurzaam alternatief voor stoffen die nu uit aardolie gemaakt wordt. Daarmee neemt de afhankelijkheid van aardolie af en is er een gunstig effect op de vermindering van CO2 emissies.

 

Furanics are a sustainable alternative for materials and fuels that are currently produced from crude oil. By using Furanics, the dependence on crude oil decreases and CO2 emissions are reduced.
